Sustainable Park Works to Reduce Our Carbon Footprint

When the Highfield Park Trust in St Albans Hertfordshire had issues with their existing footways breaking up and creating potential risk of harm to visitors, Mulberry provided a environmentally friendly solution.

Built on the former grounds of two hospitals that were closed in the 1990’s, Highfield Park in St Albans is a 60 acre diverse rural park serving the local community. With a number of footpaths across the site falling into disrepair, there was a requirement for full resurfacing. Concerns were raised by the trust that there were possible sinkholes that would lead to subsidence of the footpaths and Mulberry carried out Ground Penetrating Radar surveys and took cores samples which were analysed to determine that repairs would be safe and built to required specifications.

The trust were keen to explore an environmentally friendly scheme and opted for a surfacing solution partly funded by the Derbyshire Enterprise Trust and provided by FM Conway, that utilised recycled planings from the original footpaths along with a reduced temperature surface course to lower the carbon footprint of the works.

Minimising the impact of machinery and delivery wagons to the park whilst ensuring works were carried out in dry conditions were key requirements of the project. To meet these needs a full pedestrian and traffic management scheme operated throughout the works.
